This is a demonstration against Medicare Part D at the American Pharmacists Association national convention in San Francisco. During the disastrous start-up of Medicare Part D, many pharmacists gave seniors and disabled their drugs without assurance of reimbursement, to keep their patients from being endangered. We saluted these dedicated pharmacists and demanded their organization repudiate Medicare Part D as a disaster for patients and pharmacists alike. The Association refused. Read more

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors is poised for final approval of a massive redevelopment project for the entire Bayview-Hunters Point area, a project that will almost certainly speed up the removal of black and other poor residents from the area. Read more at

This is Mary Frances Smith at a demonstration against Pacific Gas and Electric's Hunters Point Power plant. The Bayview Hunters Point area of Southeast San Francisco is a predominantly black area of San Francisco whose problems of low income, high unemployment, poor city services, and police harassment are compounded by the presence of large amounts of toxic and radioactive discarded chemicals, sewage treatment plants, and polluting industry. The result is very high rates of asthma, breast and cervical cancer, and other serious diseases. The 75-year old Hunters Point Power Station is high on the list of pollution sources, and environmental and neighborhood activists have tried for years to shut it down. Read more at
