Midsummer Sweet Peas
Category: OUTSTANDING ORNAMENTALS
Sweet Peas growing in a coir-lined, wire hanging basket containing organic soil enriched with vermicompost.
My balcony is a pesticide-free zone because a garden is more than pretty flowers. My garden includes:
- chirping birds that sing me awake,
- buzzing bees that pollinate,
- wiggly worms that make compost,
- a princely Westie who acts as host,
- edible flowers for colour and flavour,
- and greens and berries for me to savour.
Like the hummingbirds and bees, I seek bright colours and devote some space to ornamentals. But not just for looks -- they attract pollinators, provide shade, and some (nasturtiums, violas) feed the palate as well as the eye.
Being a steward of the little bit of land in my pots and planters and observing the biota that dwell within, on and above the soil are teaching me about interdependence and balance.

Yes, they are the 'Explorer' variety. They are growing in my hanging baskets.
