Acacia koa
koa.
Juvenile growth on a sapling.
Species of endemic Hawaiian tree native to middle to high elevations of most islands. Koa trees often develop twisted silhouettes. The wood is highly prized and is one of the most expensive exotic hardwoods in the world.
Like many Acacia species, they have distinctive juvenile foliage that eventually morphs into adult 'leaves' that are not really leaves but modified petioles called phyllodes.
