Evening Rush
Just got home from a fantastic trip to the twin cities. I took this photo on the 24th Street pedestrian bridge - a spot I would not have known about had a homeless guy not told me about it earlier that day. Thanks Minneapolis homeless man!

Great shot! I am planning on going out in the next week or so.. I will have to keep that spot in mind.

Neat view of the freeway -- the streaks of light add a sense of movement to complement the skyline. Homeless guy has a good eye for photo locales!

@ MilwaukeeJohn - Thanks man! Have fun on your trip in a couple weeks... hopefully it won't be too cold.
@ johndecember - Thanks - and yes, the homeless guy totally knew what he was talking about. He even phrased it somewhere along the lines of "... and the best part about it is that someone has conveniently cut a hole in the fencing just big enough for a camera lens." Nice!
@ .Luki. - Thanks a bunch!
@ Ashokan - Thanks to you too buddy.
@ Tom - It's a cool place, that's for sure. I'll definitely be going back. It is 94, btw. And the IDS Tower is badass... so are all three tallest skyscrapers though.
@ swisscan - Thanks for the invite, I'll add it to the group. :)

great pic... well you were always good at this(slow shutter - trail of lights) and i love the way you got the buildings look perfect too! and the street lights have that star effect.. did you use any filter for that? is that actually one single pic?
markofphotography (56 months ago | reply)
@ pbo31 - Thanks for the invite! I added it to the pool. :)
@ Dhaval Jani - Thanks for the compliments. The exposure was a tad bit tricky but I did the best I could... leaving the shutter open any longer resulted in overexposed light trails along the freeway but the skyline looked better... I guess it was a trade off. With regard to the street light stars, I did not use a filter. Long exposures always result in star shapes like that. A filter would make them much more pronounced. And yes, it's a single photograph.

Pictures like this are always super cool. I've seen so many like this, yet I'll never get tired of looking at 'em, especially when they're done this well. I just wish I had a spot like this to photograph; Orlando, Florida doesn't really provide a good opportunity.

Thank you so much everyone!
@ Agnes - I'm pretty sure I talked to you about this already..
@ izmirmedia - If there was ever a homeless person deserving of my money, it was this guy. He didn't ask for any though... just being friendly.
@ Throcket Luther - I'm sure Orlando has its fair share of cool traffic photograph locations. Just find a bridge! :)
@ well taken - Thank you very much for the compliments.. I think I'll keep my groups to a minimum on this one though.
@ M0BY - I'm pretty sure he isn't as well. There are public libraries though so maybe he is!
@ Andrew - Thanks for stopping by. It's fun to know that out of all those photographs, you decided to click on mine. :)

Technical: 9
Perfect long exposure here! So hard to do, and I think you have achieved a wonderfully animated photograph - with a dark night sky and the light trails, and city lights all exposed correctly.
Composition: 9
Very good composition. Hard to achieve with such a busy seen. I love the journey one is taken on - following the light trails - the street lamp stars, leading to the serenely beautiful city of lights
Impact:9
Immediate impact. A really engaging shot. Full of life, and also really beautiful too ( in a chaotic city way).
Commercial Viability: 7
Great shot - but (as you know) there are a lot of photographs of city scapes out there. I imagine this could be used to promote the city in Travel publication, postcards etc.

Perfect exposure. None of the lights are blown out, the motion lines are where they are supposed to be. Lovely.
Composition: 10
I like the way that all of the lines lead the eye directly into the background of the building of the Chicago. There is nothing overly distracting either.
Impact: 10
High impact here. The colors work, and its evocative of life in the big city.
Commercial Viability: 9
Wouldn't really work as an art print, but might be good as an advertisement for something. Hard to say.

To get this depth of field at night without blowing out the foreground highlights is superb. The detail in the background is sharp without over-blurring the light trails. well done.
Composition: 10
Again, I cannot find fault with this as the light-trails lead the eye into the frame. The gantry across the freeway is a natural break between the foreground and the cityscape behind it and works well to define the shot. The brightly lit building is just on the upper left third and provides that extra something.
Impact: 9
Paradoxically for me the dark areas work for and against this shot. The image has plenty of punch all the same and just says 'bright lights big city'.
Commercial Viability: 8
Advertising or a movie poster? There should be some takers for a shot of this quality.
