One of the proudest moments of my life (and certainly of my 30 years police service) - to be invited to join with a selection of State Police officers from around the USA for a photograph after the President's address by G.W. Bush POTUS within the grounds of the US Capitol building.

I remember viisting the Law Enforcements Memorial when I was in Washington and I thought it was one of the most moving memeorials I have ever seen, really touching and quite beautiful designed

One of the few taken with that (cheap, non-digital) camera that came out any good - and it follows that twasnt me wot took it!!

I have never felt safer in my life - I was one of a very few people within the grounds of the Capitol who was not armed. And funnily enough we had to go through a metal detector/scanner to get in!!!

The line-up in the picture was:
Texas Highway Patrol (unfortunately - just out of pic),
    Minnesota State Patrol (3 officers),
    West Virginia State Police (2),
    Tennessee Highway Patrol,
    Florida Highway Patrol,
    Maryland State Police,
    Massachusetts State Police (2), and
    Illinois State Police (4)
    - plus of course Muggins from Northern Constabulary.

And it transpired one of the Illinois gents was of Scottish descent - we still keep in touch.

I've only gotten to the Police Memorial in DC only once. Unfortunately, I didn't bring a camera that day.

Some lowlife who didn't realize that all the police were in town that day decided to punch out his girlfriend. That was a REAL big mistake. After a wood shampoo :) the DC cops hauled him off in a paddy wagon.

30 years on! impressive. In July I will have finished 23 years.

As I was standing there, it struck me that the roadway opposite was the I-395 (you will have gathered my ID number was 395), and the Robbie Burns poem "A Man's a Man for A' That" ran through my head.
    (Brithers = Brothers)

Then let us pray that come it may,
(As come it will for a' that,)
That Sense and Worth, o'er a' the earth,
Shall bear the gree, an' a' that.
For a' that, an' a' that,
That man to man, the world o'er,
Shall brithers be for a' that.

    Robert Burns

Why are you in shirtsleeve order when the US police officers are wearing jackets? You need to keep up standards old chap :-)

  12. conner395 (63 months ago | reply)

Georgie: 10 out of 10 for spotting Old Grumpy! Even in shirt-sleeves, I was sweltering. I do not know how these guys manage, with their kevlar vests etc. Had I been wearing a tunic, I'd have passed out! Mind you, their 'dress' uniforms are lightweight whereas our bobby tunics were/are designed for standing outside in a gale. In 2002, when this photo was taken, my force had already discontinued tunics (since several years) so my offiical 'dress' uniform would have been a NATO woolly pully - and I would have melted in that, for sure!

Thats great, I didnt get to wear my uniform when I went to the Memorial. You can check out my pics in the travel and leisure set.

Nice that you came in uniform, Dave. Thanks for coming at all.

Any of you who come across the pond for Police Week, please let me know. I'd love to meet you. My brother's name is on the memorial.

This photo says it all. Great international and regional flavor.

We of the outlands ( across the country) are not allowed to participate in such grand events even though we were required to have the "class A" uniforms for just such events.

Officers, Agents, Inspectors etc of the DC area are the only ones that get to participate or represent! In a way it makes sense but we too would have loved to participate.

The "lightweight" uniforms are hotter that blue fire ... and add to that twelve pounds of harness.. wow !!

    -----------------

Honest - I can truly say that because I did NOT actually take the shot -my brother-officer Officer Bob McNeil of Norfolk PD, VA did - with my camera. And for that I am truly grateful as it records a truly special moment in my life. I still cannot fully believe all the friendship freely given to me by everybody I met in the law enforcement community (including families). It was as if I was with friends I had known, and worked with, all my life - and yet we had only just met.

I do need to look at this pic from time to time to convince myself it did actually happen, and was not a dream!

    God Bless all LEOs!

An unforgettable memory! There were Canadians there too!

Even more memorable was the Pipe Bands March through the Centre of DC. That was the catalyst for me working towards setting up a PB for my force. One day. I'd love to see NorCon PB playing thorugh DC during Police Week.
