Just after midnight, January 1, 2012. The Emirates Palace, built in 2005, is one of the world's top luxury hotels. The first "Gold to Go" vending machine, an ATM-like dispenser through which one can purchase 10g gold bars or gold coins via cash or credit cards, is located in its vast lobby. One can book a suite on their website for roughly $11,000 USD per night.

The NW view of Dubai from the Burj Khalifa

The Burj Khalifa is an 829.84 meter tall (2,723 ft) mixed-use skyscraper, and the tallest manmade structure on Earth. At 452 meters high on the 124th floor, the "At the Top" Experience is the 3rd highest building-based viewing platform in the world, and the highest outdoor observation deck in a skyscraper. The World Islands are visible in the upper left.
