Thank you all for your comments on this lichen rock.
Lincolnian: I feel that a square crop is very useful for textures - it gives the sense that this is a sample of something larger -
in this case the rock face was about six times larger than the area photographed.

You've renewed my passion for lichen photos! I captured a few on my recent vacation but I'm going to be looking for them all the time now. They are so abstract-like with infinite variations and beauty.
This shot is breathtaking!

Thank you for the comments and favorites.
I will keep an eye out for more lichen textures.
For the record on 12 June 2006
this had been viewed 102 times with 11 favorites
and in Explore is now in 'Your recently dropped' from the top 500.
While I am not particularly concerned whether photos are in Explore or not, I am still curious as to whether the the algorithm is working well or not. The recent tweekings seem to have improved the stability, with the rankings appearing to match views, favorites and comments.

I had the impression that the Explore algorithm has become more stable in the last few days. The rankings certainly seem much smoother with time, as above, which is what would be expected. I am still puzzled by why this has dropped out of the top 500 after being 240,

Maybe photos drop out because they have no views for a day or two, their position is being updated when fd is monitoring positions, or maybe there is a random element to discourage gaming.

I'm trying to figure out how you got those statistics!

These are suitable for p.point presentations background..So nice...
SorbyRock 85 months ago | reply
@JRWebb. These statistics come from fd's flickr toys
flagrantdisregard.com/flickr/scout.php
This site gives you a listing of photos currently in Scout. At the top right hand corner of each photo there is a small symbol indicating the recent movement. If you click on this, it brings up a new webpage with the highest position (at least since 19 April 2006) and the recent position history.
