Mt. Everest Panorama

Mt. Everest Panorama

Taken on my trip to Tibet, 2009.

You don't know how truly magnificent it is until you see it up close. Hopefully this captures some of the wonder.

The Sofa Kings

The Sofa Kings

Hey all,

For those who check out my flickr page on any regular basis, you know I'm rather erratic at posting. You've no doubt seen me say that many times as well!

For the past year my photographic pursuits have been on the back burner, and I've been doing some web design work and working hard on writing songs with my band The Sofa Kings.

Here is a screenshot of our new site designed by me. Check us out at www.thesofakings.ca and let me know what you think! If you ever find yourself in the Kitchener/Waterloo Ontario area, be sure to stop by for some funky licks!

Cheers!

Peppered Garlic Basil Steak

Peppered Garlic Basil Steak

I've decided to start a food photography project in my spare time. It's my first year living in an apartment where I can cook for myself and I've gotta say, it's been a ton of fun! So for the days where I create something good and decide to take a picture of it, well that's what this set is for.
_________________________________________________________

This is a steak marinade I've created combining a number of marinade recipes I've found online. I've made it with a sirloin steak twice now, both in the oven. I've discovered a great technique to grill steak in the oven - a wish come true for me, aka the kind of person who lives in an apartment without a barbecue - which I will tell you about at the end.

Marinade
- 1/3 cup soy sauce
- 1/2 cup olive oil
- 1/3 cup lemon juice from concentrate
- 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
- 3 tablespoons dried basil
- 1 1/2 tablespoons dried parsley
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon chili powder
- two cloves minced or grated garlic

Mix everything in a bowl and then pour over your steak or other meat. Cover and place in the fridge for anywhere between 6-20 hours. (The steak tastes great at both.)

How to Cook
I found that the best way to cook steak in the oven involves a couple of steps and a bit of splatter, but it is well worth the taste. Keep in mind that the times will vary depending on the thickness of the steak, and how rare you like it. I like mine pretty close to well done. If you're not like me, you can maybe even skip the first three steps.

1. Preheat the oven to 500F.
2. Place steak in a pan on the bottom rack.
3. Bake between 8-10 minutes.
4. Turn on the broiler to high.
5. Take the steak out of the pan and place on the top rack. Keep the pan on the bottom rack to catch the juice.
6. Cook the steak for about 3 minutes per side, or until desired level of brownness is achieved.

Serve with some potatoes, sour cream, green onions and a nice cold beer. I chose a local dark beer, Waterloo Dark. If you ever find yourself in Waterloo, Ontario, I highly recommend it!

I'm currently uploading old photos from my trip to Tibet in 2009 that I never got around to uploading. Taken across from the Potala Palace in Lhasa.
