Dark Horse Nebula

This is my favourite section of the Milky Way Galaxy. To the right of centre is a gas and dust region that takes on the shape of a horse sitting on its bum. It's affectionately known as the Dark Horse Nebula. :)

The very bright circle of light above the tractor is the planet Jupiter.

were you actually able to get your camera to take that picture? mine wont do that and I have wanted to get a photo like that SOO bad on a clear night.

  36. razlanjaludin (39 months ago | reply)

wow!amazing shot..do you use any kind of filters? is there any suggestion to get clear shot like yours? thanx :-)

  37. Computer Science Geek (39 months ago | reply)

Yes. Single 30-second exposure at ISO 1600. Some processing to colour correct the light pollution and enhance the contrast.

No filter on this shot, although I do now have light pollution filter for my lenses that have a 52mm thread. Here's a few hints. Get to a dark as possible sky you can go. Even a 20 minute drive away from a small city into a rural area will help. If you use a lens focal length longer than 35mm you'll need to guide or track your exposure. Mounting on a telescope with an equatorial mount is the traditional way. Or you can buy a dedicated tracking platform called the AstroTrac. The wider your lens the longer you can expose before star trails start to show up. For example, a 10mm fisheye is good for a 90-second exposure before the stars start getting out of shape. A fast lens, f/2.8 or faster helps. You may need to use ISOs from 800 to 1600 so noise can be an issue. But, to help reduce noise, Take 4 times as many dark frames as light frames. Dark frames are exposures made with the identical settings as your exposure except you cap the lens so that no light is recorded. You then average the darks and subtract from the light. The simplest software to use is called DeepSkyStacker. It's free and very easy to use.
