nothing - I came home and the desk had just shattered :o(
The cube did survive thankfully and I bought a more robust solid oak desk to replace the glass one.
I have since carpeted as I was fed up with shards of glass on the floor.

Holy crap! I bought an Ikea coffee table and a few weeks later (this past weekend) the whole glass top spontaneiously shattered in the middle of the night! Nothing was on it! Glass everywhere. It's not on the recall list but should be. I want to complain but can't even find an Ikea phone number!

How long did you have the desk before it shattered? I have an IKEA desk with NO support struts, 2 17" monitors and an amp. I'm FREAKING out right now! I need to get home ASAP!

Ouch!

I have a client who sells office furniture and copiers, and I recall sitting in his office a few months ago listening to him tell one of his customers that the 1/t8h" thick glass top table they wanted to order should not be used for anything more than a decorative table, with no more than a couple small decorative items on it.

He told the customer that if they wanted a glass top desk that would have a computer on top of it, that it should no less than 1/2" thick. He said the reason what that tempered glass is less likely to cause bodily injury because it breaks into tiny little pieces, it is more sensitive to temperature changes and any weight on top of it may stress it to it's breaking point. 1/2" or thicker glass can therefore withstand considerably more weight.

I trusted his word since he didn't sell 1/2" thick glass table tops! He was basically telling the customer to NOT buy the table he had in stock, and to buy a desk elsewhere!

So what does this tell everyone?:
Seeing & being beneath your desk should never happen simultaneously.

Like many others who have read your posting, I tended to believe that your desk shattered because of all the weight you had on it. I am, however, now a true believer and you have been vindicated.

I bought a tempered glass desk (different model) and was in the process of searching for another. Until I could disassemble my two laminate desks in my home office, I had it stored in my hallway with nothing but a wicker basket (holding a sweater)on it.

Approximately 30 minutes after I had left for work one day, my neighbor called to report a deafening crash from my place that really frightened her. I came home to find thousands of pebble-sized granules of glass strewn the length of the hallway and into two additional rooms. The desk had apparently spontaneously shattered!

I was really looking forward to redesigning my home office with a sleeker metal and glass look. I have, however, abandoned the whole idea. I'm just thankful that I had nothing on it, particularly my very expensive flat panel computer monitor!

So, count me now as a true believer! This really can happen, with or without weight on the desk.

Not to sound harsh, put it appears the desk was wwwaaayyy overloaded with stuff, and is that you're porn mag towards the center right of the photo? It's close to the CD laying against the wall... And it appears many others have made the same statement, with oddball life stories regarding glass furniture... hmm, I don't have to because I invested in wood furniture... wood, it's been used for thousands of years.

We had patio furniture with tempered glass. It had absolutely nothing on it, and it shattered. I called the company. and they said every so often the mixture they use to make the glass can be off, and if it is off it can cause spontaneous shattering. They replaced the table for us.

My guess is that this had little to do with being overloaded. Tempered glass is very strong on its face, but is incredibly weak on edge. Something to do with the crystal orientation. My guess is that something sharply bumped the edge of the glass from the side, or that the desk frame somehow squeezed it.

I once saw a demonstration where a guy took a tempered shower door and beat on it with a hammer as hard as he could. Nothing broke. Then he took the hammer and lightly tapped it against the edge. It exploded into a thousand pieces.

we had a piece of pyrex cookware explode after taking it out of the oven... i did some research and found that tempered glass can explode spontaneously but usually there is an inclusion in the glass that creates a week point. when the glass heats and cools the expansion and contraction hits the weak point and it can explode. they say to replace these kind of dishes every 5 years. even if you cant see the inclusion... scratch, chip... it can still happen.

Wow, I've had a ~40lb. 19" 'Professional Grade' Viewsonic CRT sitting on a tempered glass desktop for 3 years without trouble (Along with about 10lbs of other random crap). It's about 3/8" thick, and has a very slight bend in it from the monitor's weight (always has). At this point, I figure I'll be ahead if it shatters, since it will be replaced by a bigger, better LCD. But, I got my desk from OfficeMax for $100 after rebates. It's shaped like an oval that's pinched at the ends, and has 5 support points around the edges, no support in the middle. The CRT sits in the back between two of the supports with the ginormous back end sticking out.

I've had a glass desk at school for a long time, it was tempered about 1/4" thick and it held up. Where I lived, my room got from 50°-100°+ during the seasons. It held up a 60lb CRT monitor and worked out just fine... however my buddy bought the cheaper version of my desk with glass not as thick and while we were carrying a small section of it, the glass just shattered in his hand...

There is a weight limit ... if you exceed the weight the glass will break. id suggest you get another one but get a flat panel monitor instead or if thats an imac from back in the day get a new one they are thiner and lighter problem solved.

I used to work for a furniture store and I can say tempered glass breaks for no reason at all. The glass shelves would just break in my hands all the time as well as the tops of our glass dinning room table. Nothing like someone looking to buy a table and watching it shatter in front of their eyes for no apparent reason.

I have a glass desk from EQ3 that I bought back in 2004, so far, so good but I had a piece of plywood cut, painted electric blue and it is now underneath the glass. I have two expensive LCD monitors on it plus an iMac G4 as well. I looked at the IKEA glass desk but one thing crossed my mind is getting a tint film so if it explodes, the tint keeps it together - less shards of glass.
