Ice Fishing in Alaska

Ice Fishing in Alaska

I went out ice fishing last week. It was -22 degrees Fahrenheit (-30 C), the snow was waist deep, and we didn't get a bite all day. But there was a really cool ice fog that kept showing up, which made for some good photo ops.

And I'm pretty sure the lumps under the snow are picnic tables.

Right Outside my Window

Right Outside my Window

I looked outside my office window the other day, and there were moose in the parking lot. It's not a real uncommon thing in Anchorage, we have moose all over the place in town, and more than a few bears. Oddly, more people get injured by moose around here than bears, since tourists seem to think it's a good idea to try and pet the moose.

Giant Pacific Octopus

Giant Pacific Octopus

I went to the Seward Sea Life Center in Seward, AK a while back and got a behind the scenes tour, which was pretty neat. And no aspect of the tour was neater than this individual, a Giant Pacific Octopus (Enteroctopus dofleini). If you look to the left, you can see the fingers of the person giving me the tour, which provides some scale. The octopus seemed to really enjoy having someone to play with, and attempted to pull the guy into the tank. These things are STRONG, I really thought the guy was going swimming.
