Private Chapel & Crypt, The Mount, Kirkton, Dumfries. (Landscape Version)

Private Chapel & Crypt, The Mount, Kirkton, Dumfries. (Landscape Version)

Small private chapel with apse and crypt. decorated Gothic for the Johnstone family of Carnsalloch, near Kirkton, Dumfries. Circa. 1850. The chapel is in very poor condition with trees growing through the roof and structure.
I remembered this crypt from when I was a child, but always kept away and resisted investigating further until now. It is said that the wood is haunted by a "Grey Lady." It's a very unsettling place even during the daytime.
Nikon Coolpix 5400, converted for Infrared.
ISO 50, 1/15 at f/4. Custom WB.

St Mary's-Greyfriars Church, Dumfries.

St Mary's-Greyfriars Church, Dumfries.

The high ground on which the church stands was once the site of a small chapel erected by King Robert Bruce in memory of his brother in law Sir Chrystell Seton, and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The ruins of this chapel remained in evidence till about 1715 when it disappeared. All that now remains is the small pillar at the top of the steps from the street, constructed from stones from the original buiding.

Trees IR 01

Trees IR 01

One of a series of test images taken with a professionally converted Nikon Coolpix 5400. Not exactly great conditions for infrared, but even under these very dull conditions the effect can be seen.

Up until now I have been using unconverted cameras such as a 2.1 megapixel Nikon 950 and adding a Hoya R72 which has worked very well. The trade off is high ISO to enable handheld shots which results in some digital noise. But this can be dealt with in PP.

The Nikon 5400 is a 5.2 megapixel bridge camera and allows more scope in terms of image size. Conversion also allows handheld shots at normal exposure values.

This is an early experiment to try and gauge optimum set up. Ideally better weather would help.

Settings:

1. Auto WB and RAW - Image is various shades of purple/magenta.
2.. Image quality set to highest level.
3. ISO 50 and 1/15 at f/5.
4. Aperture Priority
5. Focus set to macro.

Post Processing:

1. Open image in PS2 convert RAW to TIFF.
2. Desaturate and remove colour.
3. Apply levels and curves.
