An abundance of lemmings in the Arctic Tundra range of Snowy Owls resulted in larger than normal clutch sizes last year and a large increase in the number of young birds successfully fledged. Much greater than normal competition for food forced many of the younger birds to migrate south in a phenomenon known as an irruption. In spite of the periodic irruptions of Snowy Owls, the species' population worldwide is judged to be in decline. This photo was taken at Damon Point, Grays Harbor County WA, where a dozen or so Snowy Owls have taken up temporary residence this winter. Snowies hunt mostly from dusk to dawn and rest during daylight hours. This Snowy is enjoying a wide midday yawn.
