Saskatchewan field in August, Alfalfa Medicago sativa
Our new home includes prairies, foothills, mountains . . . Identifying plants is one way we become more familiar with our surroundings . . . We took this on a road trip through the prairie provinces. Some plants can be part of two or more of these groups: road side plants, medicinal plants, invasive species, native plants, introduced plants, wildflowers and weeds.
I've just joined a new group for Wildflowers of North America with
quite a few rules:
Each flower posted must have the following tags:
___* wfgna – this is a literal to signify the group
___* Common Name: Alfalfa, Lucerne – Of course each species has many
local and common names. Please include at least the one you know it
by.
___* Binomial Name: Medicago sativa - Genus species
___* Genus Name separately: Genus: Medicago
___* flower color(s) – blue-violet to purple. Primary color and any
variations from this list: purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, brown,
red, pink or white. When questionable or in doubt, add all applicable
colors.
___* flower shape(s) – short spikes Primary shape of the flower from
the following list: 2petals, 3petals, 4petals, 5petals, 6petals,
manypetals, longcluster, roundcluster or oddshaped
Additionally, it will be helpful in the future to also tag:
___* Family Name: leguminosae - the taxonomic family (usually ending
in "aceae.") Fabaceae alt. Leguminosae
___* State or Province - Where the flowers was located, such as
"North Carolina" or "Northwest Territories" be
sure to put multiple word places in quotes.
___* GeoTags - Latitude and Longitude information, see Geotagging.
