yesnaby castle

Stack off the cliffs at Yesnaby, Orkney. I believe it was used for a Rover car advert - with one of their cars perched on the top. (No. Stand corrected - the Rover one is a couple of miles down the coast from this - see orquil's comment.) The hole in the stack does not bode well for its long term future.

      Steve -

No it was the North Gaulton rock stack - about 2km south of this one that the Rover car was airlifted onto by helicopter. The hole in this one has been there for as long as I can remember!

Nice photo, but a shame for you in a way that you encountered it with such a calm & docile sea state!

Thanks for the comment, artcphoto. And thanks for the correction John. Now I seem to remember - we often walk south along those cliffs (though never as far as Stromness which would require an equally long walk back). The tops of the two stacks are somewhat similar if I recall rightly.

I guess you'll just have to move here, seligr, so you can be on hand to capture the moment the stack collapses. Superb pic, too.

Thanks for the many acknowledgements - and finepixtrix - it would likely be a failry rough day and I a touch older and in danger of toppling over myself :-)

Lovely sea stack! Saw this one briefly from other cliff! And I remember the advert! (Or reading the comments.. I wonder if it was the other we visited!)

petellison: Indeed it is - despite the wave bashing it so often receives! There was a recent photo of such on the Orkney group.

I love the tones on the water, and the way the land seems to disappear into the sea......

      Wonderful photography!
