Two eggs, Nestbox #1, yesterday afternoon

    Newer Older

I found the first bluebird egg in Nestbox #1 yesterday morning. Since the eggs are usually laid in the morning and I hadn't been able to check the nestbox the previous day, I knew that there might be another egg in the afternoon - and there was!

So, both Nestbox #1 and the Peterson nestbox are in sync, and it is very likely that later today I'll find a third egg in each nestbox. Things are moving fast!

Could you send me an FZ20 invite too? I am still befuddled by what it can do. Thanks

This is such a cool project. How far apart are the two boxes?

What birds are they? They look robin's-egg blue, but too small...?

I must have bluebirds on the brain! They're bluebirds, Phil! I forgot to identify them. Apparently I just assumed everybody would know... :-)

Gale, I sent you an invitation to the FZ20 group, and also the FZ10 group. I sent them both to Garnite as well. I gathered from the Steve's Digital Cameras review site that they are pretty much the same, except the FZ20 has that additional megapixel, so I thought you might find the FZ10 group useful too.

Oh yes, the nestboxes are perhaps 600 feet apart - wild guess. I'm not good at figuring distances.

That offer of trading bluebirds for Stellar's Jays, or Starlings, or--- still stands. Would love to be able to watch this. Will along with you again at least.

This is so exciting that both boxes are busy! How many are normally in a clutch?

    11. lucycat 100 months ago | reply

Yes, Mary Anne, it is exciting! Last year was the first time we had two nestboxes in use at once. Clutch size is from 3 to 5 eggs for Eastern Bluebirds (such as these) or sometimes 6 for Western or Mountain Bluebirds. I've noticed that the first nesting of the season tends to have 5 eggs, and later nestings may have fewer eggs.

So cool you can see right into the nest and photograph the growth of those chicks.
thanks for sharing this wonderful photo. I faved it and used it to make a collage of similar photos for Easter.
