Looking Toward the Future

    Newer Older

Taken on one of the runways at the former El Toro Marine Corps Air Station in Irvine, CA. This site is undergoing a transformation into the Orange County Great Park.

Located in the center of America’s third most densely populated county, the El Toro MCAS will be transformed into America’s largest metropolitan park. The 4,700 acre airbase will be divided into a combination of wilderness parks, recreational space, schools, residential, business, farms and museums. Over 83% of the total acreage will be dedicated to open space uses. The publicly owned park space will be 1,347 acres, making it larger than NYC’s Central Park and SF’s Golden Gate Park combined. The park will also connect the Cleveland National Forest in the east with the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park (see flickr set) in the west, making it possible to hike from the mountains to the sea through a continuous corridor of green.

The question is...will there ever be a park there? So far the only thing I've seen go up on the property are homes.
