The smoke was so intense

"On the water at 4 am and for upwards of 3 hours was enveloped in clouds of smoke proceeding from the adjoining woods in both sides being in fire, and so intense was the smoke at times, that we could not see the distance of 300 yards of our canoe". John M Mcleod: August 3, 1831.

"We left our camp of the night, passed the entrance of a River, flowing into Dease's branch on the East side...Called it Stuarts River, at its junction with Dease's branch, in course of last hour a large Party of Indians must have remained for some length of time, which they made several Pine bark Canoes, and the stumps and chips of Two large Poplar trees near the spot must have made two wooden ones" -
