13 July 2013. Salt River, Ferndale Bottoms, Humboldt County, CA. Digiscoped in heat waves and about 300 meter distance. This bird (plus another probable female) has been detected along the Salt River by various parties and it's suspected this is an unmated female since it's constantly doing "coo" calls (according to recent studies of radio tagged individuals studied by Murrelet Halterman and others). Yellow-billed Cuckoo is a very rare (highly probable) breeder in coastal Humboldt County. This is the only coastal location where Yellow-billed Cuckoo is found along the West Coast. This species is detected almost annually here in Humboldt County.
