mike fink - my film history teacher

This is a really old portrait. I decided to scan some of these today. Unfortunately my scanner is small and these prints are 11x17 and there's no negatives for these... (long story) so, this is the best I could do given the circumstances. Anyway, this is from the 90's... (can't remember which year exactly, but it's from the early 90's that I do remember) This is Michael Fink, one of the coolest teachers I ever had. He went out to get beers with me and my friend Tsuyoshi after class usually. He liked it when we brought peanuts... I have this photo of him in his office, which is missing in action unfortunately. His office was like an Old Hollywood museum. Amazing man and mentor.

The lighting in this is fantastic and the the black and white really adds to this picture. The detail you got in it is also amazing what did you use?

    13. *ivo* (90 months ago | reply)

      Thanks everyone!

Ottoman: I used a Pentax K-1000 with natural lighting coming in through a window. (We were at a small café talking) And I believe the film was Tri-X 400

what major did you take in RISD? Im going to major in photo and this is one of the schools I am looking at.

    39. WendyGarfinkel (50 months ago | reply)

I had Mike Fink as a teacher in 1981 at RISD. I worked with him on a project outside of school about Falasha Jews in Ethiopia. I never forgot that. I think everyone is truly touched by this man. RISD just did a video of him speaking about his years at RISD - he said he'd been teaching there for (over) 50 years!

Beautiful photo. It really captures Mike's pensiveness. I used to sit with him at Peaberry's on Thayer street. Probably not too far off from when this photo was made. He always had such insightful things to say. I always felt a little better when I was around him.

    44. *ivo* (24 months ago | reply)

Thanks Beatographer! I used to have beers with him at a bar maybe it was the same one! It's always good to know of fellow RISD alums. Cheers.
