baby elephants

    ELEPHANTS

    I watched a mother elephant
    gently lay her tusk
    over the back
    of her baby
    She carefully moved her trunk
    from the left side
    to the right side
    of the baby's body
    I felt the powerful sense
    of touch at work
    Dusty gray
    moving in the night
    Kilimanjaro's healing water
    fills their favorite swamp
    The elephant's night pace
    is tranquil.

These are two orphan baby elephants just full of love for each other. However, sad that their mother has probably been shot by poachers.... I spent long hours at the ophanage getting to know these babies .... Each one has a human "mate" that bottle feeds them and even sleeps next to them ... with out this contact they die from no mother contact and the herd....

a picutre of love, resembling a heart, and wonderful words for this sensitive beings, often so misunderstood because of their size.
I can smell the grass and hear their voices and touch their skin and long for the cool kilimanjaro water when reading your lines. Very touching :-).

Huh well... Why don't you tell it's a fake? We can see it from the blur on their forehead and the grass...

I hate to blow your keen sense of images BUT I spent hours with these TWO baby elephants and shot many photos -the blur is simple depth of focus ... not sure what you know about animal behavior but these little guys are lonesome .... thanks for taling the time if you enjoyed the photo.

Thank you all for your comments and invites -- yes they are strong however, I was told that most of the orphans die if they don't have this contact with a human to guide them through the "mother loss" and to help them to get back to the herd .... it is that balance between human imprint and the desire to return to the herd ... I photographed over 3K images while in Africa ... soon I will hunt through them and post some of the best to be enjoyed here on flickr ...

Wonderful feeling to this shot and I remember seeing a documentary about this reserve and the carers that bond with the elephants. It really moved me because of the dedication the keepers had and the bond they shared with the animals. It moved me because of how we could experience a relationship with earths fellow beings, the potentail that is there for that and what it would do for us as people to experience that connection. Look forward to seeing the rest of the shots !

These little orphans gravitate to each other for the "skin" contact. It is so sad but how lucky that they have their very own keepers to nurture them. The internet is truly a strange place. I am so grateful to be able to read about your personal experiences here. Thank you hialoakapua.

There is so much we can/should learn from animals. Love: loving, showing love, showing one's need to love... ... ... an example. Being so fragile yet so strong, too.

I hope these babies grown up to become huge elephants. The world needs them...and they need the world.
