Self-portrait, reading, 7/31/05

Chandler, Arizona. My contribution to the July 31 group. The book in which I am absorbed at the moment is _Reading Lolita in Tehran_, by Azar Nafisi. This was taken shortly after I returned home from church, and with my wife and daughter away in Utah for a couple more weeks, I had plenty of time to relax.

Thanks, Eva. I thought this turned out quite well, especially since I hate being in front of a camera. Just off to the left of this picture, about 6 feet behind my head, are the glass sliding doors to our back patio. I had the blinds wide open. The camera was set to portrait mode, and I did use a flash, although that isn't obvious to anyone who just happens to look at the picture. I was pleasantly surprised that this came out looking as if it were taken with natural lighting. I'm still experimenting with photography in general and digital in particular, but from a purely technical point of view, I think this was one of my best efforts thus far. Moreover, this is a pretty typical glimpse of how I relax. I like to tell people that if they ever see me without a book in hand, or at least within arm's reach, that is a sure sign of the coming Apocalypse.

You read it in a very relaxing way which is interesting.
After reading the book, could you let me know what your opinion isd about it?

What a wonderful self-portrait! :O) Hope you'll find time to do this often!

Thank you, h2okatcher. As I said, I hate being in front of a camera, so I won't be taking or posting many self-portraits. But this one did work out quite well, I think in part because I read a lot and the pose seemed entirely natural. I've been surprised by the amount of good feedback I've received for this picture.

What a great photo! I'm looking for photos of people reading to put in the reading nook in my first grade classroom. I'd love to use this, if I could have your permission. Please let me know via email as soon as possible. letovega@aol.com

@jamier56: I will e-mail you separately, but if you see this first, permission is granted, as long as you comply with Flickr's Terms of Use. I hope it helps to persuade some of those kids to take up reading! :-)
