Atlas

Atlas

This is a shot of the Atlas statue at Rockefeller Center, just across the street from St. Patrick's Cathedral. Processing consisted mainly of using Lightroom to control some of the highlights and Silver Efex Pro 2 to convert to black and white.

Flatiron District

Flatiron District

This shot shows the Flatiron Building in New York City along with some of the surrounding area. The shot was taken with a D800 and the Sigma 15mm fisheye lens. All processing was done in Lightroom 4. The main look of the shot was created by setting the Clarity slider to 100, which created an HDR/tonemapped look, and setting the Luminance slider to 100 which gave the image a smooth, plastic look. Other minor changes to highlights/shadows/contrast were made as needed.

For an interesting history of the Flatiron Building (originally named the Fuller Building), I recommend the book 'The Flatiron: The New York Landmark and the Incomparable City That Arose with It' by Alice Sparberg Alexiou. Lots of interesting history.

Chrysler Building

Chrysler Building

The Chrysler Building in New York City has to be one of my favorite buildings, but it can be difficult to shoot. If you are too close, you can't really see all the nice details at the top, and if you get too far away the camera just can't pick them up without a really long lens.

This shot was taken from about a block away with my 28-300mm lens at 250mm. The final image is actually a crop from the original image. I was renting a 36 megapixel D800 which gave me quite a few pixels even after the tight crop. I finished up the image using the Pinhole preset in Silver Efex Pro 2.

I suppose there is something strange about using a $3000 digital camera with 36 megapixels to create an image which simulates the look of a cheap film camera, of course, a pinhole camera never could have gotten this close to capture the details.

I have a blog posting which also contains the 'as shot' image which shows the original full size image.

Peninsula Paper Company - Ypsilanti, Michigan

Peninsula Paper Company - Ypsilanti, Michigan

This shot shows the old hydroelectric generator building of the Peninsular Paper Company of Ypsilanti, Michigan. The company was created in 1867 and used to occupy the area from which I took this picture. The mill was torn down several years ago, but the dam and generator building were left. There have been off and on discussions about using the dam for power generation and using the building as a museum. Right now the building is just an empty hulk.

Processing started with an HDR image and had additional processing in Color Efex Pro 4, Silver Efex Pro 2 and Topaz Simplify.

North Shore Surfer

North Shore Surfer

On my recent trip to Hawaii I was able to spend a little time visiting the North Shore area, including the town of Haleiwa. This is the part of Hawaii known for big surf and surfing contests. While I was there, a competition was being held and I managed to get a few shots of the surfers. Unfortunately the longest focal length I had was 300mm which wasn't nearly long enough. This shot was taken from a tight crop of the original. As an experiment, I used OnOne Software's Perfect Resize to see if I could enlarge the image. It did a nice job, but left some artifacts. The good news is that the artifacts look like brush strokes. I think it created a cool finished look.
