Toothbrush Rug

A "toothbrush" rag rug, named after the original tool used which was crafted from a toothbrush handle with a hole in it. This one was made of 100% cotton fabric strips by Corky, a local San Diego craftswoman who sells her items at the Totally Bazaar craft fair. This one has been donated to a charity.

Can you tell me how you join your strips? I cut slits and run them through each other but it leaves me with 'bumps' and little extras to be constantly tucked in.
Also, which do you consider the 'right side' of your rug? I have always considered the side I'm working on (your other side) to be correct.
      Really nice rug!
