butter 1695.jpg

    explore may 27

You may think this an odd subject but DH did a butter shot in the current edition (very similar to this (propping and all), although hers came out much better!) and I thought it was just beautiful - so I had to go out and buy a nice big, european butter and give it a try

Bah, you managed to make darn pretty a simple cube of butter. This is just unfair toward us common mortals ;)

great shot; love the focus, arrangement and colors ;-]

i like the simplicity of color and shape here, but to add a little more allure, what would you think about smearing some of that butter on itself? instead of those two triangle wedge shapes, putting a big smear of butter love, on the larger pats.

With the light, you kinda get a sense of what "like butter" means

Thank you - this was a rather risky photo in that both the subject and presentation are so simple - so I'm glad you enjoyed!
I think that might turn this into a styling nightmare (at least for me) - in all seriousness though, I like your vision, but I'm somewhat stuck in mine for the moment based on what I saw and liked in Donna Hay which is more about cold and firm vs. warm and smeared. Somehow the crispness (or crispness in a butter sense!) appealed. Have a look when you get it and would love to hear your thoughts.
Very funny! I've been told European butter is completely divine in baked goods but have never splurged - will see what "like butter" does in action . . .

I have to be honest, the look of butter sometimes frightens me mainly for health reasons. Then again I shouldnt talk bc I use it when I'm baking hehe. But I love how "real" it looks here. The colour is so natural, the barrier between reality and image is very blurred here. I especially love the butter traces on the knife!

I wouldn't change anything here, although I might have made this completely different. It is such a simple object that you can go almost anywhere with it. I like your photo as it is, I like Melina's idea about a different styling for a different contrast. And I have some different ideas on that too. So beside styling and arrangement: the lighting is well done, the DoF is well done, the focal plain is right on for me. So, the photo is great.

      Thanks everyone
I know what you mean - go back to the very berry health muffins! : )
Thank you - I'm enjoying no fuss right now
Thanks Thorsten. Wouldn't it be interesting some time to challenge everyone to photograph the same dish or object according to their own vision / style? I'm sure everyone's would turn out completely different in a wonderful way. Thanks for your detailed comments.

      It's like butter.
How do you make such a simple subject look so beautiful?

    15. Thorsten (TK) (61 months ago | reply)

It would be a great challenge and fun. Maybe it would be something for the SLW group? I have suggested it there.

butter is not an odd subject! it is a beautiful, pure and necessary thing which deserves the respect you have given it here!! this photo just makes me want to bake! or toast some english muffins. or crumpets or crusty white bread... i love the old-fashioned butter knife - i have a couple like that and it is impossible to spread butter correctly without one! i love how you can see where the folds of the packet were. did i mention i like this shot? (and butter)

I like the simplicity of the image overall. I'm not too taken with the cut pieces at the front (but its not such a big deal). Perhaps if you had just cut one thick slice it might have had more impact. But I also understand what you were going for here. (Hope this hasn't been confusing!). Yes, European butters are great. I use "Lurpack" a Danish one. It's absolutely divine!

      Thank you again everyone.
That's a wonderful comment - thank you for all the detail.
Now that's an interesting comparison - I can't begin to guess!
I feel the same way - perhaps not the world's best styling - but not so bad. Butter, it seems, is as tricky as everything else to style - and perhaps a bit worse since you don't have much time to make up your mind.
Thank you thank you and thanks for seeing the beauty in this simple subject - I knew it was a risk but I was feeling it so I went with it : ) (btw: perhaps the the same way as you make a single window and light coming through it look so beautiful!)
I added it, thanks - great subject for a group!
