natural christmas sparkler

Congratulate to be on this location for the hundredth time! I feel bored on the landscape where I have captured twice as much. I roamed around with the only goal to get exercise. There was no snow or hoarfrost who be charmed the scene. To recover my soul I had placed my eye on details. And I fixed this with the decision to mount my macro lens. Suddenly I saw the world new. A thin layer of hoarfrost covert the plants. To less for capture trees but with this plants it becomes a motive. I let the white overflow for the sparkler effect I had saw under the christmas tree.

27.11.2010 Here you can see an other view of the same subject. Its a new post processed picture from the same photo trip. Also you can find there a description about the processing in the field and on computer.www.flickr.com/photos/gregor-halbwedl/5211684327/

Hi Gregor, because today I'm the first to comment your photo, I thought I write some lines. Using textures is new to me and for my opinion fits great with this one. And upside down this definitely looks like a sparkling stick on a christmas tree.

Looking forward visiting the Photo08 exhibition with you next week.

      Technical: 8
The name of the photographer makes it clear to me that all the technical comments I will make are not really useful, because what I perceive as technical limitation was a deliberate artistic decision by the photographer. That said, I still can not convince myself fully that I really like the burned out highlights or the overall softness of the image - and yet it works in a way that a sharp photo would not have. I like the blue background and the blended texture. Only after some watching I noticed subtle variations in the blue, which give the photo a sense of depth.

      Composition: 9
The composition is excellent in my view, contributing heavily to the success of this photo. The thought of good balance and nice diagonal layout, the simplicity and subtlety are the strengths. I like the square format that goes well with photo.

It is hard for me to think of how to improve this special photo

      Impact: 10
This is a strange photo. My initial reaction was one to dismiss this, but the more I look at this photo, the more I like it and I keep on discovering new subtle things to admire about it. This photo really holds your attention, once it gets it. I am glad I have to review it, or else I would have passed it by and missed the subtle beauty of this.

      Commercial Viability: 10
This is of course a perfect Holiday card.

      Technical: 8
Viewing size was limited but square format helped make it look bigger. Hard to judge sharpness because of the style of this photograph but the most "focused" floret looks great and the DOF i think is just right, not fading too quickly but helping the forefront stand out a bit. The post processing is lovely. I don't know what color the background was originally but this shade of blue works great. i love the texture as well. only one thing i'd say is that i wish the texture was strictly in the background and not over the plant, most noticeable in the stem. this would help it stand out just a little more. I know it's a bit picky and the way it is now still works just fine. also not sure that maybe the lower left is slightly blown out? hard to tell with the treatment and again i don't think it detracts much.

      Composition: 8
Nothing too critical to say here. i like the square format a lot. i like the positioning of the plant and where the stem runs down the side. i like how the DOF you've chosen gives a 3 dimensional aspect to the photograph and the main starburst shoots out from the upper right. the lower left group maybe could be even lower down in the corner more but again just a nitpik.

      Impact: 8
It's a simple photograph and one that doesn't capture the attention for too long but it's lovely to see, very pleasing, and has a cooling effect that's not too bitter cold. Pleasantly cool I'd say. Overall it has an effect that's more than many like it would otherwise have so I give it good marks.

      Commercial Viability: 7
Different than your typical shot. Certainly if this were someone's style, it'd look good on a wall as art. You can custom make square notecards and this would be a great image for that. Maybe stock photo for ads of something cool and fresh?

      Technical: 9
Technically excellent photo with just one minor complaint: it is very light and the highlight details of the frost are burned out so that details are missing. It works well though in this context and I assume it was done on purpose. Fantastic pastel colors and a good use of texture in the post processing. Sharpness is good and where it should be. The choice of DOF is excellent.

      Composition: 8
The composition is interesting with a good use of the square format. I like how the lower left plant adds balance to the overall picture. Albeit dominant the upper right flowers are beautiful and well positioned.

      Impact: 8
Very pleasing photo which is unique in many ways. The background colors stand out as striking (not bad for a background) and are beautifully contrasted by the frosted flowers. Wonderful effect and one to remember.

      Commercial Viability: 8
I can see a number of very good commercial opportunities for this photo. It could definitely be used for cards of various kinds and I am sure it would also look good printed on a wall - albeit perhaps a bit on the feminine side of preferences.

Beautiful image, Gregor. Indeed, a macro lens brings up a full photographic Universe where photographic skills count as much as aesthetic taste and personal sensitivity.

I wish you and your family a very happy New Year, Gregor, with fine health, a stable job and great photographic opportunities like the ones you've shown us during this last year.
