So, let me tell you the story of how Krista and I ended up with a wood-fired pizza oven / smoker on our back deck. We got a bonus check at work, and when money like that comes our way we like to play a little but usually that means purchasing some tools of tools for the house. I have always wanted a wood-fired pizza oven, but after looking at the requirements of space, pouring a cement base, masonry skills, I ruled doing it on my own out. Then after looking at how much it would cost to have a contractor build one, that also was ruled out. But that does not stop me from looking on the interwebs for one that would work.

One afternoon I was Binging "wood fired oven" and found www.EcoQue.com . Then found out that the company was local here in Seattle. So Krista and I headed down to look.

Once we found the store ( in the industrial area just south of the freight yards in seattle) we met Tim Jewett, the designer. He is a nice man and is excited to show the wood-fired oven. Our plan was to just look, go home, think it over, and decide if we wanted to purchase. After the demo Krista looked at me and said "just buy it".

Starting at the bottom, there is a large storage compartment that acts as the base. That raises the fire box up far enough that it is safe to use on the deck. Next are the handles that slide out. These allow you to move the top unit during assembly and to move the whole unit.

Next is the fire box. Well designed full extension drawer that keeps all embers easily in the box. You would really have to try to get embers out onto the deck. The door to this chamber has three vents to control air slow.

Then comes the pizza oven. It is enclosed and does not get smoke, just heat. The base of this section is lines with refractory brick to create a great mass of heat. That is topped with a pizza stone. The door is glass so you can monitor the cooking.

The top of the unit is the smoker chamber. And on top is the stack with a damper that allows you to control smoke and heat. smoke

The unboxing. The oven comes in two large boxes. We took the base unit home that same day. It is by far the easier of the two. Only 60 pounds. My neighbor, Kent got it into the shed to await the remainder of the oven.

Just the base weighs 60 pounds. Sounds much more impressive that 27 kilograms.
