Montana Gold Dust

    Newer Older

Explore 25 jUNE 2008, AT $ 378. Best viewed large. They say half the fun is getting there. That was the case with my recent trip to Glacier National Park. We traveled through northern Utah, southeastern Idaho and northwestern Montana photographing along the way. Late one evening we unexpectedly came across this scene near Ronan, Montana. The sun was low in the evening sky and to the west looking into the sun, we saw the golden reflection off the dust or some kind of mist just above the ground for about a mile. I bracked the shot and chose an under exposed version which gave an ethereal and mysterious look to the landscape. The speck to the right of center is a bird. Taken 19 June 2008, Nikon D300.

Another beautiful one, love it underexposed a bit. Perfectly done!
OK, so confess: did you get your tripod out of the trunk like all the books say we should, or did you handhold? (Personally, I'm quite certain I WOULDN'T have gotten my lousy tripod out of the back.)

I did get the tripod out. I'm getting too old not to. I only hand shoot if there is no other option. I can check each side of the frame and see things I outherwise wouldn't. I use it for composition as much as to avoid the shakes. It isn't too much pain because I bought one with a ball head and attaching it takes two seconds.

I didn't spot the bird until I viewed it large! Lovely lighting and atmosphere!

Wonderful layered effect here. I can't wait to see the rest of the images from your trip although i guess I'll have to until I get back from mine.

Interesting shot, I don't think I'd have chosen the underexposed version myself; then you are the master.

What a unique photo. Such an artistic eye. I've never seen nature quite this way. I wonder if this sight is familiar to the nomads in a desert?
