Cars waiting for the Southwest Chief to pass by. I took this very early in the morning from my sleeping car. This might have been Holcomb, Kansas, made infamous in Truman Capote's book In Cold Blood.

The lobby of the Hotel Marshall in downtown Sacramento seemed to sag with the oppressive weight of hopelessness and defeat. Even the signs on the wall issued grim directives. I wasn't welcomed by the receptionist, so I took my pictures quickly and departed. There is apparently some talk about the possible renovation of the building. The exterior is actually quite handsome in a way.

The topic for Sunday, the 19th of February was "Your Own Hand." Here we are...my left hand with just a little bit of processing.

Passing through Raton, New Mexico on the Southwest Chief.

There will be no slaking of your thirst in Starkville, Colorado. Ed's Tavern appears to have closed many years ago. I took this as Amtrak's Southwest Chief raced by heading for Raton, New Mexico. The building seems to be possibly within the possibility of restoration. Perhaps some hardy soul will have its taps flowing again soon.
