GO: a community-curated open studio project

With “Go: A Community-Curated Open Studio Project,” the Brooklyn Museum is taking a page from all the television shows — “American Idol,” “The Voice,” “Dancing With the Stars,” “America’s Got Talent” — that rely heavily on audience opinion.

Here’s how it works: Brooklyn artists will be invited to open their studios to the public. A visitor who has seen at least five studios will become eligible to nominate three artists for the “Go” museum show. Museum curators will visit the 10 most popular artists’ studios and from that group will make selections for the exhibition, on view at the museum from Dec. 1 to Feb. 24.

Web and mobile technology is central to the project. Artists must register at www.gobrooklynart.org from June 4 to 29. Visitors to the artists’ studios must also register, either by sending a text message to a number listed on posters at each studio or by entering a studio number using a “Go” mobile application. Visitor registration opens on Aug. 1 and runs through the open studio weekend, Sept. 8 and 9.

“One hopes we’ll see new artists’ work,” said Sharon Matt Atkins, the managing curator of exhibitions at the museum, who has organized the project with Shelley Bernstein, the museum’s chief of technology.

Ms. Bernstein said that the point of the project is to get area residents out to really look at art. “We’re opening up the curatorial process,” she said. “It’s museum as hub.”

During GO, artists across Brooklyn will open their studio doors, so that you can decide who will be featured in a group show at the Brooklyn Museum.

Artist registration begins June 4!
