Nikon D700
w/ Nikkor 85mm f/1.4D
Initial thoughts / short review :
- The D700 is slightly heavier and bulkier than D300.
- The viewfinder is bigger and brighter than the D300, I'm fine with
90% coverage.
- The high ISO is as good as what you'd expect from a D3 sensor.
- I don't like the CF card door, I prefer something like a D300 CF
card door latch.
- The info button is very useful and intuitive.
- The rubber flap that covers the USB and HDMI ports is not closed
properly or not as snug as the D300.
- The in-camera AF motor is as fast as the D300.
- And, I find the focusing is noticeably slower under low light
condition. Under bright light, the focusing is faster than my D300.

the AF should definitely be faster than the D300. what settings do you have for a3, a4, a5 and your AF-area mode and AF mode?
the CF door is a really big negative.

a3 : 21 points
a4 : off
a5 : Shutter/AF-on
The AF area mode : Auto
AF mode : S
I've tried various settings, the AF area mode : Auto is definately slower than the D300. Other settings seem to be working just as fast as the D300.

faster with Dynamic and AF-C?
maybe try that instead of Auto.

Well, I just found out that the focusing is slower under low light condition. Under bright light, it focuses faster than my D300.
Thanks for the help Ry.

Nice. Would love to have one. Just no need for one. Altho' the low-light would be nice. So is the 300 your backup or is it getting put on the block in order to finance this bad boy?

Nice work! I actually got to fiddle with a D700 today at my local top-shelf camera store... WOW! ISO 6400 is like "butta" ;) Love the sound of the shutter too...

Mike, I've been thinking of keeping the D300. I think I'll end up keeping the D300 and use them both side by side
I'm not too keen with the D700 pixel density. DX reach is also something that I take into considerations. D300 is by far the best DX camera that you can get in the market.

My D700 came today. So did NX2. I am astonished the NEF --> output is so much better than ACR 5.2....
I am loving using the new D700 with the 24-70 f/2.8 & especially the 50mm f/1.4 prime.
I so love my D200 with a Nikkor 18-200 VR, but the IQ and low light performance is just worlds apart. I love shooting wide, so FX is really comfortable to me. I know a gently used D300 ought to be in my lineup for the DX reach... But my infatuation for the moment is with the FX body and {N}-grade glass.

Also, I second the CF door: it sucks. Should have some kind of micro-latch, at least! But even worse is the rubber boot over the ports: it's worse than my D50 in that it wobbles open too easily.
Otherwise the thing is a tank. Nearly D2H in sturdiness.
