this picture has nice details, and I like the intense gaze with the colorful eyes. The defender's picture is a creative one, but I prefer this more.

The defender's picture has required imagination and "staging" which are quite impressive to me. Your picture is great as an animal/nature one and technically perfect. They are really hard to compare for they belong to very different fields. In a different context (comparison) maybe.

This is a good use of selective colouring, but the defender makes me giggle a Gothic Giggle everytime. Its very very original, and well executed.

i would say yes, definitely yes... because this shot is too powerfull... the eyes are amazing...
this challenge is like nature vs human... i vote for nature... ;)
Matt Champlin (73 months ago | reply)
I don't like the defenders shot at all - way too artsy abstractive nonsense for my tastes. Your shot appeals to the nature aspect of life for me - and things that can be captured in the real world without a lot of artificial set up

I'll go with Champy. I do think that composing pics like the defender's isn't real photography, how good and creative it may be. Well, that's my puritine vision.
Back to the challenger: the selective colouring looks brilliant. This is a stunning 'portrait'.

Here you have a definite winning shot, presented well and in my opinion, a much more captivating topic. Good work.

Congratuations Alive in Calgary (I saw and liked the movie, btw) :)
@champy1013 and Kevin van Vliet: have you ever heard of conceptual photography? (just to make an example, ad photography is always conceptual, in some sense). But then again, you may like it or not.
jamie B (73 months ago | reply)
concerning the above comments of champy .
These are dismissive, disrespectful comments, a kind not welcome at 100best.
As for the "realness" of rimbaudians work, vs the challengers, remember, watch the contradictions, this is an artificial colouring of an animal in a zoo. Not exactly natural or real either.
~Kevin~ (73 months ago | reply)
I can understand why you think this is a ridiculous comment. As you point out both pictures have been post processed (I also think about 50% of the photo's on Flickr is post processed, even mine). So that is not my main objection. I only tried to point out that to me a photo is a reflection of a moment. The composition of Rimbaudian is not a reflection of a moment, it is a composed piece of art. That is my point.
I don't think I was dismissive with my comment, perhaps a little bit direct. I didn't say Rimbaudian's work sucks. It's just that to me the work of Rimbaudian is not photography. If this is considered to be photography, where do we draw the line? If I would render some incredible buildings in a photo I took of an open field, would that be photography?
Or can I take the nice cloudy sky from one pic and paste it into a pic taken on a rainy day?
The challenger's shot may have been post processed, but it is still the moment he captured. That's what counts for me.
(btw: even if the challenger took his shot at the zoo, that doesn't mean it can't be a good shot! That was also a ridiculous comment ;-)
To conclude: It was never my intention to be disrespectful, but if it felt that way then then I'm sorry.
I also have to apoligize to you 'Alive in Calgary' for using your comment space for this discussion!

Kevin, I don't think you were disrespectful and I'm totally fine with your vote. (I even like AIC's shot and I'm faving it :) ). My only point is that it looks like you have a limited vision of photography, as in the end you identify it with merely "capturing the moment". Well, there's much more than that, in my humble opinion. I repeat, as an example, that most of the advertisment images you find in magazines are conceptual shots taken in artificial setups and not in the "real world", whatever that means. Many of them belong to a specific category, called photomontage, are regarded as art, are very appreciated and very well paid. Even on Flickr there are many great artists that do this kind of stuff, Simon Pais and Noqontrol, just to name two. If you have time, I'd suggest you to take a look at their photostreams, since their best images are viewed and favorited by thousands of people (even my freaky pics, which are not as great as theirs, usually get hundreds of faves). In the end, I think that a good thing about Flickr is that it can help us widen our horizons.
