You have to love it. Maids caps & aprons, eh?

    2. simon_white (52 months ago | reply)

I was so relieved to find it: my maid hasn't been the same since she outgrew her last uniform.

Mmm. You can never have too much haberdashery.

"Ribbons" have faded. They look like "Pigeons".

I wear this stuff all the time (and all at once)

    6. simon_white (52 months ago | reply)

      That's a worry, Pat!

so excited to know where this is. I've been looking for flanelettes and calicoes for ages.

    8. simon_white (52 months ago | reply)

I don't think I've ever seen the plural of calico written down before, but it's lovely to see it spelled correctly :)

It's a relief the sign predates the invention of winceyette and brushed nylon.

75 views and lots of comments, but no guesses :(

Now, I know GWLers are a very South London bunch, but the North London Hole seems to be growing bigger.

This is in Camden, and has a NW postcode.

      Wot, no "Surgical Appliances"?

    11. simon_white (52 months ago | reply)

      Is anyone going to guess?

Is it worth trying to think of clues?

Or should I just send it to the Graveyard?

    12. Monkey Magic (52 months ago | reply)

is it near that "boots the chemist" sign in Camden Town?

most disappointed I don't know where it is!! clue might possibly help.

    13. simon_white (52 months ago | reply)

      Not in Camden Town.

A wider view should help. At least for googling.

      Slightly wider view

Side of Gorgeous Cafe, York Rise, NW5

    15. simon_white (52 months ago | reply)

Exactly. The street sign says Bellgate Mews.

Did you go in? Or the Dartmouth?

    17. simon_white (52 months ago | reply)

No. I was on an afternoon ramble and dipped down York Rise just to take this (old signs are a popular bye-line in Guess Where London).

The Gorgeous Cafe is to let, so I probably should have.

    18. Capo2 (52 months ago | reply)

It was the flat above that was to let - which is how I found out where it was ;o)

On the even wider shot, which isn't on Flickr: "Cafe lease for sale Bruce 020 7267 6772 www.brucecommercial.co.uk "

      Aha that explains it...!

I hope the current guys get it!

I’m currently pulling together the Shoes & Clothing section of the Ghost Signs archive and would love to include this sign. Please add to the ghostsigns pool if you’d like to help establish the archive and support the History of Advertising Trust charity. See some other categories here and here.

      Thanks,
      Sam
