ALL THIS MOTHER'S DAYS HAVE COME AT ONCE !!!
Strewth. Found this little domestic scene about ten feet in the air under the house eaves. The picture is about four times the actual size.
Talk about an extended family!
There's a cartoon theme song in this: "Look out, here comes the Spider-mum!"
Dedicated to my mother, who probably wished she had eight legs what with having four kids....

wonder how many she eats....
zero g (72 months ago | reply)
Or will they eat her?
In mummy's tummy or yummy mummy?
Matt West (72 months ago | reply)
Is that mummy or daddy? It's Fathers day today here in the UK, and that makes this image all the more scary! Seriously tough - beautiful shot. :o)
Ove and Lucia (72 months ago | reply)
OH, that's a big family. Not any one-child policy here, definitely!
zero g (72 months ago | reply)
-Thanks Matt West. Pretty sure it's mum, spider-dads usually don't hang around 'cos they get eaten if they do. I've done better shots but none balanced so precariously on top of a window ledge holding onto a drain pipe. Ironically, felt a bit like Peter Parker myself! Perhaps I should send it to the Daily Bugle so J. Jonah Jameson can publish it with the caption, "Spider-Man Abandons Pregnant Mistress In Love Nest Scandal !"
-Thanks Ove and Lucia. Hah hah. No, I don't think any of these are going to grow up to be spoilt Little Emperors! Though apparently few off this brood will survive to become adults. Most will get picked off by other spiders, insects and birds.

Holy Cow!! Eeeeekkk....what a lot of spiders!
This is a great capture though...as long as they are nowhere nears me!

I am looking at this picture and I am hearing a crowded schoolyard at recess in my mind.

Great picture zero g! It makes me think of Spring time (and food for birds) :)
There was an old lady who swallowed a spider,
That wriggled and jiggled and wiggled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
But I dunno why she swallowed that fly -
Perhaps she'll die.
There was an old lady who swallowed a bird;
How absurd, to swallow a bird!
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and wiggled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
But I dunno why she swallowed that fly -
Perhaps she'll die

-pinklassy3- And yet I see this as a scene of arachnid maternal bliss.... :) What is the collective noun for a whole buncha spideys?
-i_yam_annie- Spiders have schools? Who knew!?
-dollsye- thank you kindly dollseye. Can only briefly pop into Flickr for brief moments "on the fly" while we're focused on this insane house moving biz! But I wonder, does the old lady swallow a cat, then a dog? Actually, by the time she tries and fails to swallow the lion she probably will have died! How amazing that you have the whole poem!

ZERO G!!! They are so adorable I could cry. I am actually hearing the tiny, baby spiders from Charlotte's Web crying, "Goood byyyeee, gooodbye!" as they fly off to live their teenie, tiny, itty, bitty, eentsie, beentsie lives. Hey, ZG, that's my sis up there, Annie!
Anyway, LOVE this, as always. **eel hugs** .....H.V.
HaggisVitae (72 months ago | reply)
P.S. ZeroG, I was wondering if you, in fact, counted them and included a "MUM" for each and every teenie, tiny, itty, bitty, eentsie, beentsie spiderlette?? Curious, I am.
zero g (72 months ago | reply)
Now my compound eyes are misty...mind you HaggisVitae, it easy to kick all those wee bubs out of the nest when you've got eight legs to start with!
-Yeah, I figured that was yer sis on account of the icon. Hi to the Vitae Clanswomen!
-Noooo. I knew it would be quite possible to count each spiderling and give 'em each a 'Mum' but I figured it was even more fun to not do that and then wait and see how long it might take for someone to call me on it. Either that, or some of the babes are actually shy and socially retiring, the delicate, sensitive kiddies that would simply sit quietly and wait 'til mum got around to them. Ta for the fave too.

Ta for the fave Angus McDiarmid!
zero g (72 months ago | reply)
Ogami Sensei, it will take a long time for these spiders to party until they are all 'legless' !
HaggisVitae (72 months ago | reply)
Can you imagine if all these baby spiders were born without legs. What would they ever do? How could that EVER earn a living? They would just roll around crying and screaming and waiting to be eaten by something that eats legless spiders. How very, very sad. I need a moment to meself. *sniifffsniffff*
zero g (72 months ago | reply)
Urk! Haggis that's...a curious image! Would be sad indeed.
"Legless" in Australia of course means dead drunk as in "Pissed as a Cricket/Parrot/Newt", "Four Sheets To The Wind", "Flat Out LIke A Lizard Drinking Piss" and so on....
:))
HaggisVitae (72 months ago | reply)
Ahhh, well then. Legless...had not heard that before, my friend. And funny too how 'pissed' here means mad/angry to the point of spitting or hissing. Just as I was yesterday at work with my brand new piece-O-crap (almost typed 'carp') microscope! ;-)
zero g (72 months ago | reply)
Carpe Microscope! Sieze the microscope!

Lovely spiderettes & spiderlings, but poor put-upon mum. I like this one very much... I hope a few of these immortalized will indeed get to live long(legged) and fruitful lives.
zero g (67 months ago | reply)
Ta for the fave whirrdz,
Yep, spideys are fascinating beasties, I felt honoured to get this domestic picture. We moved house ourselves not long after I took this, so I hope the new tenants are as tolerant as we were of the small critters.
