Interesting Photo Sighmon a very hard thing to do. I saw my father, grandma, grandpa and nanna . My dad and grandmother looked great and peaceful. My grandfather and nanna looked nothing like them and I was very disappointed.

      thank you everyone.
my grandpa was a good man.
he was a farmer for the majority of his life.
he survived stomach cancer for 17 years.
and finally gave in to lung cancer age 85.
      he was a fantastic cyclist.
      and a very opinionated man.
he made machines out of old white goods motors and pulleys to do everyday tasks.
his dogs were loyal, well behaved, helpful, caring creatures.
his fruit, vegetables, wheat and milk were incredibly delicious.
      his meat and fish divine.
my kids never got to meet him.
but one day, i'll tell them all about their great grandpa.
      one day.
hi grandpa! is your next life as good as your last one?

your grandpa would be proud that you have created such a beautiful memorial for him and have shared it with so many people. i hope this helps you to find closure and peace with the loss of his passing. may your family be blessed.

      lovely image sarchi.
your father had great foresight to offer his body to science.
it would have been such an emotive decision when he was still alive, but as you will well know, once the heart has stopped, the body becomes such a strange snake skin.

thank you everyone for your kind words.

The photo is sad but peaceful at the same time. I found your poem very touching. It's hard to lose someone, especially someone who sounds as lovely as your grandpa, so I feel for your loss though I am glad you remember the positive things fondly.

Great photo! My grandfather is 89, and just yesterday had a heart attack due a blood infection and now is in ICU with very low blood pressure and failing kidneys. He I am afraid is not long for this earth. This photo struck me deep.

Oh my, my eyes are full of tears as I read the poem and look at your Grandfather's peaceful expression. This brings memories of my own family's passings and sadness.

My sincerest sympathies to you and to your family.

I'm surprised you had the guts to take that photo, I wouldn't have... I don't think I'd even bring my camera to a funeral, period.

Your poem really made me tear up - and I am not exactly the emotional type. I can totally relate to your beautiful story and loved my grandpa as well - deeply. We were so close. I am 35 now and he passed away a long time ago - May 31st, 1985. To this day I still miss him so much and think about him almost daily. While I carry him with me in my memory I would give just about anything to spend one more day with him.

I am sorry for your loss.

Wonderful poem and God Bless you for sharing this with everyone
Very brave of you to do this

    27. sighmon (61 months ago | reply)

i'm so glad that my grandfather is bringing such emotive responses. he would have been so happy to meet you all, offer some of his organic produce and sit down for a drink and a yarn.

the photo was such a hard one for me to take. i sat through the entire viewing silently, everyone else left and i was sitting there alone with my camera. my hands shook, tears rolled onto the cold camera.. i closed my eyes and pressed the shutter.

adam: maybe our grandfathers will meet one day soon, have a port, laugh about the silliness their grandson's are getting up to, and remaniss about the good old times.

There is a long tradition of post-mortem photography, but it is more interesting when a family member takes the picture.

    29. escapetonewyork (61 months ago | reply)

Thanks, Sighmon, for posting this. My heart goes out to you. I was studying the history of post-mortem photography when my grandfather died a couple years ago and instinctively phtographed him in his coffin. Some thought it very strange, but it did have a healing effect on me, though I've had to put it away now. There was an odd reassuredness to looking at it, knowing and hoping that he was elsewhere, happier. It is brave for you to share this an an honor to the healing tradition of postmortem photograpy. I hope it helps you to heal as well. Take care.

This photo makes me feel better, because death scares me. Your grandpa looks so peaceful and the hint of a smile at the corners of his mouth. I could look at him without flinching. Thank you. Yes, I'm tearing up now as I speak.

i feel for you too. my grandfather passed on the 24th of last month. he was 95. it was hard to see him, someone who's been around longer than anyone i know, go. it felt like the beginning of the end for me.

    43. sighmon (61 months ago | reply)

escapetonewyork: it definitely has helped the healing process along for me. i get to say hello to him now through images, almost communicating, sending him smiles.

Unhindered by Talent: thank you! i see you've been through similar moments with your father, but with a better outcome. hugs!

woofer95828: i'm glad the photo made you feel better. i know some people have been shocked and hurt by me posting this photo of my grandfather. so it's lovely to hear your words.

fotambulo: i'm so sorry to hear about your grandfather. sounds like he had a good run of 95 years. its still hard and a very strange feeling that i still aren't quite comfortable with. but at least our grandfathers will be keeping each other company with stories of their long wonderful lives.

Great shot.... My Father passed away on 2/12/07. He would have been 90 on 5/27/07.

I wanted to photograph him, but my Mom wouldn't have gotten it. Since she needed me more then I needed the shot I didn't bring the topic up.

Hope they met up there. My Dad likes to talk to people. Maybe now he can hear again. :- )

hi sighmon, your words including the picture of your grandpa reminds me of something what had happened 3 or 4 weeks ago, know what ? my pop passed away May 8, 2007, i know what you're in to and going through coz i feel the same way. it's been a month now but still, the emptiness, the pain and the realization of knowing that he's gone.....O God! I really missed my pop! soon, i wish i can also share my story to all of you!

@jogorman - its my pleasure to share this with you all.

@fizzi fish - he was a great man, but a regular guy. which is what i loved about him the most. he knew who he was, and really enjoyed just being himself.

@bmbphotos - i'm sorry to hear of your father. he will definitely be talking with richard up there somewhere. supporting your mum was a lovely thing to do. my mother had the support of many other family members, and really wanted me to take the photos and video of the funeral and cremation. i'm glad i did.

@wajudadmom - hugs to you and your family.

@m | preaux - thank you so much.
