Crazy Rainbow Sunset

While photographing the sunset from inside the Victoria Clipper, I discovered that somehow the combination of their window treatment and my polarizing filter created an awesome rainbow effect. Though the sunset was pretty, it did not actually look like aurora borealis - but it did through my lens.

Hah, they must use polycarbonate (or acrylic) windows. The color distortion is due to the strain left in the plastic from the molding process.

More than likely the explanation is that the light reflecting off the ocean is polarized (essentially, the water surface acts as a huge friggin' polarizing filter itself, hence you can cut glare from it with your polarizing filter). The plastic under different strain twists the light differently and you pick up the twist on your CPL filter.

30-40 years ago before the age of computers, this was one of the most common ways to study the effect of stress on a part. Make the part out of clear plastic, stress it and photograph it with 2 polarizing filters.

Polarizers and plexiglass or acrylic will do that. Normally it will ruin a photo but this looks really neat. Very cool
