Your lovely photo conceals how unimpressive Mount Rushmore is in real life. (At least I thought it was pretty lame compared to the Corn Palace.)

The Corn Palace must have been impressive then!

The detail of the fissure lines is nice. Some clouds above would have added a lot to this already nice pix.

Steel it is really worth the visit. The Rapid City, South Dakota area is quite stunning. The rest of South Dakota is very flat, but around Rapid City are the Badlands and the Black Hills. It is about a 10-12 hour drive from my house to Rapid City and we have been there a number of times. Jim Bowen has a great set of photos from Mt. Rushmore

Hi Jim I´m a graphic designer and I want to know if I can use your image of Mount Rushmore in a text book for elementary school children. There`s no commercial purpouse, just educational. The book is given for free to the children.

You are more than welcome to use it.

If you would like to learn about what a racist (real meaning of the word), xenophobic bastard that Teddy Roosevelt was, read THE IMPERIAL CRUISE by James Bradley. It will make your blood absolutely BOIL to learn about how this single jerk set the curve for the Second World War in the Pacific, the Communist Revolution in China and the wars in Korea and Vietnam. Not to mention how we slaughtered Filipinos and others under his presidencies. A must read for all Americans. After reading this amazing book, I think that his image should be blasted off of Mount Rushmore.

    35. jimbowen0306 (24 months ago | reply)

I don't dispute Roosevelt had some interesting views on race, but I really don't think that his views were that atypical at the time.

Equally, ask a lot of Americans about their view of America and they'll tell you something that amounts to "American exceptionalism." It's my belief that Roosevelt was an exceptionalist, who viewed it as his responsibility to "do something with it" (because of his position as a leader of the free world).

That self view is still about today, and might have contributed to everything from Watergate and the invasion of Iraq, to "Brown vs. Board of Education" and the election of Obama.
