A Massachusetts Mother And Her Four Children, Including The Newest One

A Massachusetts Mother And Her Four Children, Including The Newest One by mrwaterslide.
Say you have a Continuum, with Skepticism on one end, and Unalloyed Joy on the other. Place each of these four Baby-Onlookers on that continuum and you get a pretty wide spectrum. The mother's Unalloyed Joy is pretty much universal, or perhaps that's the look that draws mrwaterslide into Mother and Child photos. It's the varying looks on the faces of the three other children that make this photo priceless, to me anyway.
I bought this photo on Ebay, and it was offered among a group that portrayed this same woman and her child. The photographer was the woman's husband (at least, that is, according to the Ebay seller). Out in Ohio, folks are hoeing in their gardens and trying to make a living, but up in Massachusetts, they loll-about in brainy indolence and dabble in amateur photographer.
It's a great photo, and I love it. Happy Mother's Day.

I recognized these children instantly as those from an image in my collection! The cabinet card I have is not nearly as special as this image, no pleasing smiles or joyful spontaneous expressions in mine - this one is truly a delight and a rare gem. However, I thought you would be interested in seeing an image that must be from the same grouping (perhaps even a duplicate of one in your collection?). I hope it's ok to reference you and your image in connection to mine. Do you have more info about the family and children? My image came with no identifying information at all. It would be wonderful to see more from your group. I'm not good with links, but I think you can connect with the photo here or in my cabinet cards set:

Astonishing and lovely flickr reunion for these photographs. Well spotted Lauralemur.

In Mr Waterslide's photograph I took the child with the doll and the uncertain look to be a boy. Clearly in Lauralemur's version she is wearing a dress. It seems to have been common for children to have their hair cut when seriously ill and I wonder if that was the case here.

I think it might be a boy too - hence the "boy" doll. The plain, rather tailored and undecorated skirt seems pretty typical for young boys in the 1880s and 90s. I actually even wondered about the gender of the oldest child in the pinafore - in my image "she" looks rather boy like. However, it could be that her hair was tightly pulled back or cut (is that a hair bow just over the left edge of the collar?). It would be much more highly unusual for a boy this age to be in a dress, so ultimately I have to vote on this one being the one and only girl in the portrait.

I've never seen this kind of spontaneity in a family picture from this era. Amazing.

The bored disgust on the faces of the two kids to the left is priceless. Is the one on the right only doing that soppy grin because his mother might notice if she looked up?

florriebassingbourn--- this photo posits the difficult challenge of finding "le mot juste." My take on the girl on the left is "disdain masking keen interest." The middle boy: "standoffishness hiding perplexity." You may be right that the boy on the right has a look concocted to please his mother (or Dad, who's taking the picture), but that "look donned to please" does not completely hide his "genuine excitement."
Glad you found the photo.

If you figure that the boy with the doll had been the "baby" in the family until the new one came along, I can imagine he'd feel a little ticked off.
