Africa. Elephant wallowing, Etosha Park, Namibia.

Wildlife photography is very exciting, things move very fast, you have to contend with bad or tricky lighting, AND be quick off the mark !! I am geared up for Landscape stuff, and I do not get much practise with this field of photography, so I am afraid these shots are not great, but I have had a few requests for animal shots, - let's face it , you can't do an African set without having SOME wildlife shots !!
We were told, because it was the 'rainy season' we would not see any 'game', but we did ! Plenty of Elephant, and some Lion, lots of different antelope, zebra, etc. These shots of Elephant were taken in mid-afternoon, when lighting is straight overhead, not at all ideal. BUT, this is the best time to see these lovely animals at the wallow, it is extremely hot, and they slosh the mud all over themselves, then stand awhile to let the mud dry, this keeps them cool. The ultimate sun tan lotion !!!
I was amazed at how patient they were, a whole family, they each took their turn, and watched each other at their ablutions ! No yelling "have you finished in the bathroom yet ? " !!
    Will this do Renae ??!!

Don't put yourself down, I think this is great.

Q: Why do elephants have big ears?
A: Because Noddy would not pay the ransom!

      Ouch !!

Great shot....I have the canon 40D to...the photo has small motion blur in the large size....so up the the ISO a little and the speed 1/800 and f/9 as the lower end and the shots will be sharp...

    5. jmtimages (51 months ago | reply)

To me, I think the motion blur works here because it conveys a sense of action with the elephant sloshing about there and the mud flying up. Excellent wildlife capture and change of pace, Barbara!
Have a good evening and take care! :-)

    6. Barbara Jones / photosecosse.com (51 months ago | reply)

I quite agree Jack, without motion blur the shot would be too static, I intentionally wanted to convey the delight the Elephant was experiencing by tramelling the mud with it's huge foot !!

    7. T_smith (51 months ago | reply)

Simply outstanding photo. You for sure captured the power of such a huge creature.

And you did exactly that by using a slightly slower shutter speed to get blur where it was needed...very well done!
Also underexposing the image was a smart decision as well with that harsh sunlight. I hope you caught more wildlife in action, Barbara!

    9. Geoff Main (51 months ago | reply)

Nice action, on first sight I thought he was charging!

      Very good, mud bath!

    11. bryanilona (51 months ago | reply)

I too thought he was charging from the thumbnail - I guess if he had been, you wouldn't have been posting this!
It's obviously enjoying its turn at "mudding"!
One of my daughters was a great one for this, and once solemnly told me she'd give up mudding when she went to school. Until then, mixing and spreading mud over outdoor surfaces and self was almost a daily ritual. That one went on to study fashion design, while the other studied ceramics - so she caught up on "mudding" at Heriott Watt!

      Lovely shot capturing the action.

On tour, you gotta be always clickin'- I think I take 4 or 5 shot/hour, sometimes more... I am amazed when I check the EXIF data and see them separated by seconds...
I love action shots and this mud kicking is great!

Nice one.........I can imagine your excitement faced with this spectacle, from what I've seen all wildlife shots benefit from the animals doing something so for me this is a great capture!

I expect they really enjoy mudding about, as others have said ...just being there with these majestic animals is a treat...getting images like this when working so fast is the icing on the cake, well done !
