The first thing all dogs must learn, unconditionally, is to sit. Sit, then stay. With 8 dogs, (or even with 1!) we had to have a command for them to follow at human dinnertime. It is "we're eating." When I say that, they all go to that corner and sit and are rewarded. I can use "we're eating" anytime, but that's their cue and that's what they do, even with Winston and Kodie gone. If one gets up, I have to raise my voice and become more demanding as I say, "WE ARE EATING!" and push them back into place. Honestly--it works.
