Hoboken is well known as the mile square city. In that area are five catholic churches. They are what was known as national churches, each founded by a different ethnic or regional group. Four of then were founded to serve different groups of the Italian-American community.
St. Francis was founded on May 5, 1888 to serve people mostly of Genoese extraction, who had been in this country only a short time, and for whom the language barrier was a genuine problem.
