Alpha Female of Lamar Canyon Pack, aka '06'

Alpha Female of Lamar Canyon Pack, aka '06'

Though she's collared and has a different official number (like 832F), she'll always be '06' to her followers, as she was born that year. A day in the life, from what we saw, involved leaving the den for the first time since her pups were born (2-3 days prior), crossing a road full of cars and anxious onlookers, having a snack of fresh elk meat next to the Lamar River, then heading back to the den. Her pack's territory is being pressured by the presence of a much larger group (16 strong) known as the Mollies. Since this picture was taken, she and her pack of 7 have narrowly avoided a disastrous confrontation while continuing to kill enough elk to survive. The average life of a Yellowstone wolf is 3-4 years. Easy to see why.

Fawn in hiding

Fawn in hiding

While out looking for warblers, I nearly stepped on this one. Only moved its eyes a little while I tried to take a picture with my bird set up. Couldn't make it work so finally (duh) figured out that my iPhone would work okay. Not the best quality but I think that the subject is so interesting it doesn't matter.
