Spain - Barcelona - Casa Batllo Roofspace - sq
I was literally the first person into Casa Batllo when it opened in the morning. I rushed through the first few rooms, returning later, to enable me to have the Gaudi masterpiece all to myself.
From Wikipedia : "Casa Batlló , is a building restored by Antoni Gaudí and Josep Maria Jujol, built in the year 1877 and remodelled in the years 1904–1906; located at 43, Passeig de Gràcia (passeig is Catalan for promenade or avenue), part of the Illa de la Discòrdia in the Eixample district of Barcelona, Catalonia.
The local name for the building is Casa dels ossos (House of Bones), and indeed it does have a visceral, skeletal organic quality. It was originally designed for a middle-class family and situated in a prosperous district of Barcelona."

Thanks, Barcelona is an amazing city and the Gaudi buildings particularly are easy to photograph well given good light and an absence of people. I spent a completely manic four days from dawn till dusk (and beyond) taking photos and needed a break when I got back to recover.

Good job being the first one there. I was there in the late afternoon and had to spend much of my time waiting for people to leave. I love the lower perspective on this shot -- and the clarity and crispness of the image. Very beautiful -- blows my shot of the same scene out of the water! Well done.

DG - just to say I've just looked at the preview of the book and I am mightily impressed (unfortunately not sure I need another book on Barcelona - I have a shelf full already :)
I've also been impressed with each shot as it's come up on Flickr. The fact that I haven't commented on each one is only because I don't think you need anyone else telling you how good they are. I think it's called jealousy :)
All the effort you put in has certainly paid off and you seem to have timed your visit perfectly - great light and fewer tourists. Very well done.

That is just a fantastic picture, Darrell. One of the best Casa Batlló shots I have seen. Excellent framing, lighting and viewpoint, and the roof arches and light alcoves look great in this shot. A fine architectural shot.
Darrell Godliman (42 months ago | reply)
I've just noticed the similarity between these arches and a Calatrava structure at the Athens Olympic Complex :

Thanks everyone, this is proving to be one of my most popular images in quite a while.
I though it might be interesting to to show you the original jpg so that you could see what this shot has had to go through to get to the presented image :
I deliberately underexposed the original shot to retain highlight detail. During the RAW processing I've then sorted the exposure and contrast out. In PS I've then straightened it, cropped to a square and warmed the colours up. Lastly I added a frame to make the photo stand out against the white Flickr background. Not all shots go through the mill as much as this one but sometimes you just have too.
bradman334 (42 months ago | reply)
I think you did a great job on this image - well justified. BUT I do like the extra tiles in the original :)

mmmhmm. i really like that you got down low to the level of the table, further accentuating and lifting the geometry of the room and the lines of the table (rather then the having a heavy tabletop dominate the frame). Smart.
