Rath-na-gCupán - Jordan's Castle circa 1250AD

I was down in Mayo at the weekend. Took a stroll up to the castle ruins that stands about five minutes from our cottage. It's really amazing to have something like this so close to us, especially when my family's connections to Raith date back centuries.

Uncle Tommy had heard rumours of my Flickring.......I suspect annonymous family member browsing ;o) He informed me that once he figured out that it was Flickr without an 'e', I was easy to find.....amusing

Apparently it was here that Philip, son of Gaisdealbh attacked the O'Ceirin and forced him back, for we find him with a bridge-head established at Raith in 1265, in which year he built the Castle of Raith -later known as 'Rath-na-gCupán'. Next year he defeated O'Ceirin and Mahon Mac Ceatharnaigh . - who was killed. The ruins of Raith Castle still stand in the townland of Raith about two and a half miles from Kilkelly and six miles from Ballyhaunis. It was in the style of the usual Norman Keep, with a moat. The remains of the moat may still be seen on the Western side. Additions were made at various times and early in the 17th century it must have been an imposing structure judging by the remains. From here the Gaisdealbh extended his conquest and succeeded in gaining possession of the whole of Northern Narney, that is Aghamore parish. Website
