Livin' on the edge at St Kilda's Acland Street

The first time I stayed in St Kilda it was for the Moomba Festival not far from here. This part of Acland Street is a tourist strip, with cafes and a futuristic-looking tram stop. Walk down the road and there's the Halycon building, once a grand mansion and later a rooming house...and at the other end the Prince of Wales hotel. Which is not far from the closed Gatwick Hotel, renowned as the home for down and outs. Amazing contrast of boom and bust in this beachside suburb only 6km from Melbourne's CBD!
