Swirls

I'm not sure to the name of this stream, though it runs by the car park at the bottom of Mt Helvellyn in Cumbria called the Swirls. I did not have my tripod with me, so I settled for placing the camera on the bolders you can see in the bottom right.

is a very pretty spot, exposed very well for the water, nice movement, i think you could selectively brighten the bg a bit, appears a little dark to me, the fg rocks bothered me at first but i am less bothered the longer i look at it....nice shot..

Lovely picture. I love the water movement and the fence at the top. The bottom rocks could be a distraction.

May be tempted to crop a little off of the top but otherwise this is a very effective take on moving water. #3 (from the IWANT5! group)

Beautiful capture of movement; would like to have seen a closer shot without the rocks on the right.

beautiful long-exposure. looks like a pretty area. a little more light would make it even better...hopefully this is nearby, so you can experiment a little. nicely done

The illusion of movement of the water is well done. It's a shame the bridge is lost in the background because of a low light. Still a good shot, great point of view.

I can't resist commenting on this. You did great to make use of a boulder in place of the tripod. Good judgement with the shutter speed. The boulder at the foreground right seems to bias the camera metering quite a bit, but the overall effect is hypnotic.

Thank you all for your comments.

I took this picture while on holiday in Cumbria. In truth I'm still learning to use the camera, and it did not help that I forgot to pack the tripod! I wanted to see if I could force the shutter to stay open long enough to blur the water. Without the tripod I'd given up on composing a nice picture, but thought I'd play with the settings so I would be ready next time. I simply plonked the camera down on the boulder and hoped for the best. That it turned out as well as it did was pretty serendipitous.

The low light is what made the long exposure possible so I'm not too sure what I could do about that in the future. I played around with all sorts of crops... there is a lot of mess and rock chopped off. Perhaps in future I should find a location with something more photogenic behind the stream.

Oh and remember to pack the tripod!
