Northern Command
Employee Awards for 2010

Trooper Dan Gordon has been with the NHP for almost 4 years. He previously served as a police officer in Washington DC before moving to Nevada with his family. Trooper Gordon is very passionate about traffic safety and has spoken to a number of driver’s education classes in his assigned area in Douglas County throughout the past year. In the past twelve months, Dan developed a safety presentation centered on providing younger drivers with driving tips as well as explaining the dynamics of crashes and those events attributed to distractions and impairment. His passion for providing education and awareness concerning traffic safety to our younger drivers was even recognized by the local justice courts. Additionally, Trooper Gordon made the most DUI arrests last year among the other troopers assigned in his area. Congratulations Dan!

Sergeant John Schilling is a twenty-year veteran of the NHP and is currently assigned to the Northern Command headquarters office in Reno as the administrative sergeant. He supervises the front office personnel, fleet mechanics and radio communications maintenance personnel and projects a very positive and pleasant working environment to all of his peers. He also represents the agency by his direct and active involvement with the Northern Nevada DUI Task Force and is instrumental in acquiring grant funds secured by the Office of Traffic Safety. He is active in the community and volunteers some of his free time with the Nevada Humane Society and the Special Olympics Nevada organizations. Great job!

Todd Schacht was selected as the 2010 Northern Command Employee of the Year. Todd’s remarkable work ethics, and the fact that he is the “go-to person” when it comes to police vehicle equipment modifications, are few of the attributes that secured him this award. He is one of the NHP’s fleet mechanics assigned in Reno and had served in that position in our southern Nevada office. Most recently, Todd was asked to assist with installing K-9 cages in a few of the vehicles assigned to our Las Vegas office. He unselfishly agreed to be away from his family while he completed this task in southern Nevada. Todd’s supervisor noted he is a stellar employee in his field and was complimented as a pleasant and personable individual. Terrific job Todd!

This year, the NHP-Northern Command Appreciation Award was given to Denny Gortari, an employee with the Department of Public Safety assigned to the agency’s headquarters building in Carson City. Denny’s contributions and direct involvement with facilitating and guidance in a number of large programs helped to secure him this award. Denny was instrumental in assisting our region with numerous contractual issues and he is the business foundation for the Nevada Highway Patrol’s strategic safety plan. Way to go Denny.
