Seraphim's kiss
:::
Seraphim gets up close and personal.
I never heard of swans being vicious, so maybe that's why I did not fear Seraphim's playful nips.
Maybe he just senses I am Alpha Female and knows better than to mess with me.

Swans have a bad reputation. But in fact you only have to be careful with them when the male protects a female with off-spring. I am sure Seraphim ( I love that name) is harmless. And he knows very well that you feed him. And the saying goes:'Don't bite the hand that feeds you.' ;)

Careful, Jolene - it'll be awfully tough to work that shutter button without an index finger. It *would* make you eligible to serve chili at Wendy's, however.

He's the Alpha Male of the lake...you move in and stake your claim as Alpha Female...you KNOW you two are going to knock beaks whenever possible.

swans and geese are renowned for their temparament. some places use them as guard 'dogs' as they are quite territorial and like to make a lot of noise :)

Do be careful with Seraphim, meaning keep your face out of grabbing range. Swans can get quite aggressive at times, and can bite really hard if they want to.
Marshall24 (97 months ago | reply)
Great photo! I doubt I would get that close to any swan, unless I was putting it in the oven.
I've never seen a swan's tongue so thanks for the enlightenment.

I can vouch for what others have said. Swan bites hurt like hell...almost as much as the ridicule you have to endure from others who ask: "You were attacked by a what???"
Hadjek [deleted] (96 months ago | reply)
yeah these chickens are vicious! If you swim too close to them.. they can kill you.. this actually happened once in my country. what a way to go right? =) killed by a large chicken. more like jaws.

We've got swans here in New Rochelle - at the twin lakes at the high school - they are pretty tame but will protect their babies. One lady got a broken finger from a perfect hit with the Male Swan's wing.
Here's a peaceful pic of him -

J. When you get a chance could you pull all the Serephim pictures together as one story? It is a wonderful one but is scattered all through animal encounters.
OldhaMedia (77 months ago | reply)
Sure thing, Gale... should I post them in a new topic with small versions pasted into the thread?
