Mortimer's Hole is a tunnel which runs up from the base of Nottingham Castle Rock to the castle high above. Legend has it that in1300 King Edward III used this secret passage to enter the fortress and apprehend Sir Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March, lover to Edward's mother Isabell and murderer of Edward's father Edward II.
The arrogant Mortimer had believed himself more powerful than the young king whom he regarded as weak and enffectual.
In November of that year he paid dearly for his miscalculation; he was hung drawn and quartered at Leicester.
It is said Mortimer's ghost haunts the tunnel whilst Isabell's voice, pleading with her son to be merciful, can be heard from time to time within the castle grounds.
