"Gradierwerk" - brine evaporation works
Industrial monument recalling the days of winning salt by natural
evaporation of brine by allowing it to trickle over stacks of
blackthorn twigs. Once the brine had reached a concentration of about
20% it was then heated to drive off the water and crystallize the
salt. This process was discontinued in the 19th century with the onset
of rock salt mining.
Now used for curative purposes as an open-air inhalatorium in the park
of the spa town Bad Orb.
Before Orb became a spa town i.e. Bad Orb, it used to have 10 of these
immense wooden structures for concentrating brine. This is the only
one still in operation but is no longer used for salt winning.
